The CompHealth allied health staffing office in Grand Rapids, Mich., celebrated the beginning of back-to-school season August 23 with a bus of their own: the Michigan Blood Bus!
Jill Vanderzand, recruiter for the speech language pathology (SLP) team and organizer of the blood drive, says the idea came when she heard a radio ad about the need for blood during the summer.
"I wanted to donate blood, but with two kids, there's just really no time for me to do it," Jill says. "I thought if I could do it at work, then I'd be able to do it. I talked to Sandra [Raehl] about it, and she had a personal connection to the cause and said I could go ahead."
Eleven pints of blood were donated by Grand Rapids employees and staff members from nearby offices, and Kelsey Legate, recruiter for the physical therapy team who was unable to donate blood, brought snacks for the donors.
