United Way Day of Caring: SLC and Grand Rapids offices pitch in

This month, our people in Salt Lake and Grand Rapids took part in local Day of Caring events to support the community. Scroll down to learn more about the activities and their experiences:

Grand Rapids: Laura Wilson, Maria Gardner, Katie Rosenberger, April Applewhite, Greg Kuyper and Kevin Duffy joined other volunteers to help at New Branches School in Grand Rapids. They had fun making appreciation gifts for mentors and books for the students to take home. They also helped clean and organize the new classroom.

Salt Lake City: About 40 employees from the Salt Lake office volunteered at Neighborhood House facilities in the downtown and Cottonwood location, assisting with projects including general landscaping, window washing as well as assisting with arts and crafts, putting on a talent show and taking a trip to the zoo.

 

Haylie Norr, a client developer for CompHealth allied staffing in Salt Lake, shares, "I think I had the best assignment of all for the Day of Caring! Matched up with Marjorie and visiting all the exhibits at the zoo turned out to be the highlight of my week. Marjorie was delighted by all the animals and the perfect weather. She laughed and giggled all day as we met the baby elephant, saw gorillas and giraffes and peered into reptile cages. It is fascinating how pushing a wheelchair and answering a few questions can endear you to someone so quickly. I'd be willing to bet that if any of the ten employees who were at the zoo turn up M-I-A in the near future, you just might find them at Hogle Zoo with the crew from The Neighborhood House. Thanks for a wonderful experience and for introducing me to 10 new friends."

"I never knew helping the elderly could be so fun. They have so many funny things to say that my abs were sore by the end of the day from over-laughing!" shares Edward St. Louis, a software engineer in CHG's IT department.

Jewel Dowda, a client development rep for CompHealth locum tenens, helped with various projects including the landscaping, bingo and art/crafts and enjoyed helping and talking to the seniors at the center.

"I would recommend this experience to anyone," she says. "I could see there was need in our community to help anyway you can. You just have to take the first step and try it!"
