Abigail McCarthy, a senior provider rep with our CompHealth division, loves to help others with her loveable poodle, Aiden. Since Aiden was a puppy, Abigail knew he was going to make a difference in people’s lives. At age three, Aiden became R.E.A.D (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) certified and now, together, Abigail and Aiden spend most of their spare time at the local library working with R.E.A.D kids.
R.E.A.D. is the first program in the United States that utilizes therapy animals to help kids improve their reading and communication skills. A common side effect kids develop by doing this is a love for reading. Go figure.
One of Abigail’s favorite parts of volunteering with Aiden is seeing the progress a child makes — watching their demeanor change from nervous and shy to excited and confident.
Abigail uses her company-paid volunteer time off and flexible schedule (two benefits CHG provides its people) to work as a R.E.A.D volunteer. Both of these benefits allow her to meet with kids during work hours and gives her the opportunity to put others needs as a top priority.
