Julie Balk has a favorite saying from Mahatma Gandhi: "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."
For the nurse practitioner now working in our Salt Lake City, Utah office's on-site Marathon Health Center, serving others is essential — and Julie's colleagues have noticed her commitment as well. She received a distinguished alumni award from Westminster College on April 24.

Since receiving her bachelor's of science degree in nursing from Westminster College and her master's degree and doctorate of nursing practice at the University of Utah, Julie has worked in a variety of clinical settings and donates her time locally and globally to the medically underserved. One of her most memorable experiences was traveling to The Solomon Islands with the Help a Friend Foundation to provide healthcare and education.

"No matter how busy you are, you can always find ways to serve," Julie says. "There are always holes to fill — and once you give, it comes back two-fold."
Julie is also active in her community and in her three sons' lives, previously serving as PTSA president at their schools and as an active part of the high school lacrosse team's parents' club. She enjoys spending time with her husband and family and also finds time to participate in triathlons and marathons.
"I think CHG does a great job of promoting service as well," Julie says. "Whether you're participating in United Way Week or Sub for Santa, it makes you happier. We're all helping the bigger community and making everybody stronger."
