When Alexandra Veeren began working for CompHealth in 2011, she never foresaw the challenges her family would experience in the upcoming years. Neither did she predict the way CHG would support her through the hard times she faced.
"CHG's core value of Putting People First is the only reason I have been able to care for my disabled husband by working remotely," Alexandra shares. "The best thing about CHG is the focus on work/life balance and the incredible people who really care."
In her current role, Alexandra works as an associate recruiter on the CompHealth psychiatry team. Her favorite part of her job is getting to know the doctors she works with and helping facilities find the right providers.
Read Alexandra's touching CHG story, told in her own words, below:
My husband was in the hospital a total of 175 days in 2013. Because CHG really follows the Putting People First core value, I was able to spend every day with him. Once I had used all of my PTO, gifted PTO and EIB, my husband was still in the hospital. I contacted HR and filled out the necessary paperwork to take FMLA leave, but I still was unable to return to work once my leave time was up, so I had to quit my job. During the time I was out of work one of my co-workers spearheaded a donation for a gift card for me to help out with some of my expenses. It was the nicest gesture of friendship ever! Seven months after I left, I felt ready to return to the workforce. At the encouraging of some of my co-workers, I approached my leader and asked her if it would be possible for me to come back to the team, but work remotely so I could be at home if my husband needed me. She said she would see what see could do. About one week later she let me know that she would be able to bring me back working remotely as an associate recruiter for the team. I have really enjoyed being back on the team and I am able to focus on my job because I am not constantly worried how my husband is doing at home because he is here with me. Now with changes that have been made to our health plan, I am able to include my husband on my insurance even though he has a pre-existing condition and am no longer worried about losing my house because of the ever-mounting medical bills. I can honestly say that CHG, my team and my training partners practice the Putting People First core value every day. I had been working for CHG for two years when my husband, who was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma in 2005, needed to be hospitalized for an extended period of time in order to have his second stem cell transplant. I had saved up all of my PTO and Extended Illness Bank hours, planning to use them for the transplant and expecting to be back to work in just a few weeks. Unfortunately, my husband's transplant didn't go as planned and before it was even complete, I had used all of my time off hours. My wonderful team and co-workers who had been in my original training class donated PTO to me so I could continue staying at the hospital with my husband. Once I had used those hours, my manager allowed me to come to work for a couple of weeks while my husband was out of the hospital, which added more PTO and EIB hours to my bank.
