As Mike Weinholtz, CHG's CEO, announced in a blog post to the company Dec. 17, the Newtown tragedy has hit close to home for our people at CompHealth permanent placement in Norwalk, Conn., some of whom have children or relatives and friends whose children attend Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Many employees commented on the post, sharing their sympathy and concern. When Missy Horan, a Norwalk employee whose son attends Sandy Hook Elementary, expressed a goal to create a "winter wonderland" in the students' temporary school and requested help making snowflakes to hang there, the company sprang into action.
Within just a few days, boxes of snowflakes — handmade by employees in every office — began pouring into Norwalk.
"I had no doubt in my mind that this was something the North Carolina office wanted to be a part of and needed to do," shares Mark Hudson, employee engagement coordinator at Weatherby Healthcare in Cary, N.C. "We have been receiving snowflakes from all over the place. Scott Finkel from the Fort Lauderdale office even sent snowflakes from his wife's classes at Park Vista High School in Boynton Beach, Fla. What is truly remarkable is the amount of overwhelming support Missy Horan and Sandy Hook Elementary have received across all offices and from all over the country."

And people around the country jumped at the chance to help Missy and other Norwalk employees with another goal: purchasing 600 copies of "A Terrible Thing Happened," a book for children who have experienced violence or trauma.
Since Missy posted her blog comment Dec. 17, 300 books have already flooded into Norwalk — and many more are on the way. The Norwalk office plans to give each Sandy Hook student a copy and provide local libraries with books as well.
"Through these very dark days in our community, the sun is starting to break through as we get word of thoughts and prayers directed our way. The overwhelming kindness from friends and strangers is such a blessing," Missy says. "My heartfelt thanks to all the prayers and thoughts coming from the best company ever!"
